About the Inn and its History

Click to enlargeNestled back from the road and teeming with history, the Captain Tom Lawrence House Bed and Breakfast is an intimate inn for those who appreciate fine accommodations and warm hospitality in a beautiful and historic setting. The Captain Tom Lawrence House reflects the warmth and charm of an elegant private home. With its circular stairwell, hardwood floors, and high ceilings, the house, which is listed on the National Historic Register, remains much as it was when Captain Tom Lawrence lived here more than a century ago.

Located just a short walk from the main street in the historic Village of Falmouth, Cape Cod, the inn, which was originally a whaling captain’s home, offers a blend of New England tradition, old world charm and convenient access for exploring the entire Cape and the nearby islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

We invite you to make our inn your home away from home, and experience the warmth and hospitality of this historic seaside village. Whatever the occasion - honeymoon, anniversary, or a weekend get-away - the Captain Tom Lawrence House is for you.

All have private baths, cable television and refrigerators for your convenience. Relax in one of our spacious corner guestrooms, with high four-poster queen-sized canopied beds. Or, perhaps you would prefer the Captain’s room with its graceful lace coronet above the king-sized bed.

Make yourself at home in our air-conditioned inn with its spacious sitting room, accented with comfortable furnishings and a variety of antique accessories. Daily newspapers, magazines, and plenty of information about local interests will acquaint you with the area so you can make the most of your stay in Falmouth.

Honeymooners, small families, or anyone looking for peace and privacy also have the option of staying in our spacious fully furnished, centrally air-conditioned apartment.

Breakfast is thoughtfully planned and prepared by your hosts. You'll enjoy fresh fruit and a variety of creative entrees such as whole wheat Belgium waffles served with seasonal fruit syrups - the inn's specialty. Crepes, omelets or breakfast stratas, brimming with fruit or vegetables, are only some of the fine recipes that you will enjoy before a day exploring Cape Cod and the Islands. Coffee cakes, scones, and muffins - baked fresh daily - complement the sit-down breakfast.

About Captain Tom Lawrence

Young Tom Lawrence left home at 17 and sailed aboard a Nantucket whaler, the Massachusetts, with Capt. Jared Coffin as master. This was in 1838. From then on, he was sometimes on land but oftener at sea. He married and his wife bore him a son and a daughter in Falmouth. As success came to him he took his wife with him on his voyages lasting 4-5 years. This was a custom of shipmasters from Cape Cod.

His daughter Amelia was born in Fayal in the Azores and her sister Mary was born on Pitcairn Island among the survivors of "Mutiny on the Bounty" fame. Amelia was five years old when she got home to Falmouth, but she lived here into her late nineties.

Capt. Lawrence sailed as master of the whalers Addison from 1848-1852, and the Anaconda, 1852-1856. He made a final voyage on the brig Alto, 1857-1862. After this, he retired and stayed ashore as a local businessman. His whaling voyages had made him rich and enabled him to build a fine residence and take up a life of comparative leisure ashore. Today we enjoy the fruits of his industry at his fine residence, which has become the CAPT. TOM LAWRENCE HOUSE, "Bed and Breakfast Inn."
